Specialist High School Major Information
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). This career focused program is designed to help prepare students to make the transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace. SHSM enables students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in the context of engaging, career-related learning environments and helps them focus on graduation and on pursuing their postsecondary goals. (Sector guide, 2007-2008)
The Upper Grand District School Board currently offers Specialist High Skills Major programs in the following sectors: Agriculture, Arts & Culture, Business, Construction, Environment, Health & Wellness, Hospitality and Tourism, Information Technology, Manufacturing, and Transportation.
A student who chooses to pursue SHSM designation will be provided the opportunity to acquire sector recognized certification and training. The cost of this training will be provided within the SHSM budget. Some of this training may occur outside of the school day and therefore it is important that the student and parent recognize the additional commitment required. All aspects of this program must be met prior to graduation in order for the student to acquire the designation on their diploma. It is imperative that the student make every effort to attend training and certification sessions or risk being withdrawn from the program. Certifications acquired outside of this program may be recognized. Documentation should be presented to the SHSM coordinator for approval.
Note: Most certification requirements for the Health and Wellness Diploma are met through the successful completion of the Leadership Aquatic Program (LAP).
